Have We Chosen

Collection State of Hessen, Regierungs’ Präsidium, Kassel Germany
constructed in summer 1993 for an exhibition in documenta Halle “Luftkrieg in der Kunste” commemorating the night of Allied bombing that destroyed three-quarters of the city of Kassel

Steel fragments, a group of them -quite obviously the outcome of a destructive process-rise abruptly from the ground. One of the hardest and most unbending of materials has here been subjected to the most powerful deformation. Stones surrounding the base of the sculpture (like toppled grave markers) are the building stones of structures that no longer exist.
